In Their Own Story

The swamp was quiet the way it always was at dusk—cicadas humming, the pond reflecting a bruised purple sky. Dragon circled low above the cattails, her wings catching the last amber light, and Shrek sat on the porch step with a mug of something steaming, not looking up. He didn't need to. He could feel the warmth of her breath on the back of his neck, the soft thump of her tail against the wooden railing.

"You're staring again," she said, settling her great green head beside his shoulder. Her eyes were half-lidded, amused.

"I'm not staring. I'm thinking."

"You're staring. I can feel the staring."

He laughed, the low rumble that always made her scales ripple. Below them, the children were somewhere in the garden, shrieking with the particular delight of ogre-dragon offspring who had just discovered they could both breathe fire and stink. Dragon's expression softened in a way only he ever saw. She pressed her snout against his cheek, warm and rough, and for a long moment neither of them spoke.
